Comparison is the Thief of Joy

We’ve all been there—feeling content, proud of our accomplishments, and confident in our progress. Then, out of nowhere, we encounter someone who seems to be living a life that’s bigger, better, or more exciting. Whether it’s a friend landing your dream job or a stranger’s glamorous social media post, these moments can quickly make our achievements feel small in comparison. Suddenly, the car you once loved or the home you were proud of doesn’t seem enough. Comparison kills happiness.

Every time you measure yourself against others, you strip away your sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. But you can stop this cycle of comparison.

Focus on Your Progress, Not Theirs

Your journey is uniquely yours and comparing it to someone else’s can rob you of the joy in your own growth. It’s easy to feel disheartened when you see someone who seems to be far ahead, but focusing on the distance between you blinds you to how far you’ve already come. Instead, shift your energy toward tracking your own milestones and celebrating them. When you take a moment to reflect on where you started, the progress becomes undeniable, fueling your motivation and sense of fulfillment.

Recently, I found myself slipping into the comparison trap when I saw a fellow speaker and author land a spot on the Mel Robbins Podcast (Mel Robbins is my speaking IDOL). Immediately, I questioned my own worth and whether I’d ever reach such a milestone. Let me be clear—this speaker is absolutely deserving, having earned her success through incredible talent and relentless hustle. Yet, I couldn’t help but feel a wave of inadequacy. But then, I disrupted my own negative spiral. I reminded myself to focus on my own path. In 2024, I secured 36 speaking engagements, most of them as conference keynotes. When I retired from policing, I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to inspire others to optimize their lives. Now, I’m on track to surpass that record next year, speaking on even bigger stages—and for that, I’m profoundly grateful.

When I pause to recognize how far I’ve come, I realize how counterproductive it is to dwell on what I haven’t achieved. Instead, I choose to celebrate everything I’ve accomplished so far.

Avoid the Highlight Reel Trap

Social media is a carefully curated showcase of life’s best moments, not an accurate reflection of reality. When you compare your everyday life to the polished, filtered versions of others’ lives, you set yourself up for unrealistic expectations and unnecessary self-doubt. Remember, everyone has struggles—they just choose not to share them publicly. The “filters” on social media don’t just hide physical imperfections; they also mask the personal challenges and setbacks that everyone faces.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen relationships that looked picture-perfect on social media, only to learn later that they were on the brink of divorce. The same goes for business success—you rarely see the sleepless nights, setbacks, and sacrifices behind the scenes. That’s why it’s essential to limit your scrolling and focus on building something authentic in your own life, something that’s meaningful beyond the screen.

Tip: Set time limits for your social media use or unfollow accounts that trigger feelings of inadequacy. Curate your feed with people and content that inspire and uplift you. Instead of feeling disheartened by others’ highlight reels, see them as a source of possibility. If they’ve achieved their goals, so can you. My remedy for social media is to “create before I consume.” I focus on my writing and building the next keynote before I start scrolling.

Set Personal Goals

Clear, personal goals are essential for staying focused on what truly matters to you. While having goals is important, it’s the consistent action toward those goals that makes the difference. Each day, focus on a few key tasks that bring you closer to what you want—not what others have. Success feels more rewarding when it’s measured by your own standards, rather than someone else’s.

When you can tune out the external noise and zero in on your priorities, you’ll find yourself so immersed in your own progress that comparison fades away. You’ll be too busy moving forward to worry about how others are doing.

Here are a few steps to help you set realistic, meaningful goals:

  • Break your goals into daily, manageable tasks.
  • Celebrate small wins along the way.
  • Regularly revisit and adjust your goals to ensure you’re staying on track.

Practice Gratitude

Gratitude has the power to completely shift your perspective, turning your attention away from what you feel is missing and toward the abundance already in your life. When you take the time to appreciate your achievements and blessings, you cultivate a deep sense of fulfillment that no comparison can overshadow. Every step forward, no matter how small, deserves to be celebrated. Take a moment, breathe deeply, and soak in the beauty of what you have right now—not what you think you’re missing.

Tip: Make gratitude a daily habit. Start by journaling three things you’re grateful for each day, even the smallest moments. Whether it’s a good conversation, a quiet morning, or a personal achievement, this practice trains your mind to focus on life’s positives. Over time, you’ll notice it becomes easier to see the good, no matter what challenges come your way.

Limit Exposure to Triggers

If certain environments or people make you feel inadequate, limit your exposure. Protect your mental well-being by curating your social circle and online spaces.

If attending certain events or following specific influencers stirs up feelings of jealousy or inadequacy, it’s okay to take a step back. Surround yourself with people who encourage and uplift you instead of those who trigger insecurity.

In short, comparison steals your joy, but you have the power to reclaim it. By focusing on your unique journey, setting meaningful goals, and practicing daily gratitude, you can protect your peace and cultivate a life full of purpose and satisfaction. The only race you need to run is your own, and every step you take forward is progress worth celebrating.

It’s time to stop letting someone else’s highlight reel dim the light of your own achievements. Instead, embrace your path with confidence and let your progress—however small—be your inspiration. You have everything you need to create the life you want, but it starts with looking inward, not outward.

So today, take action. Set one new goal, acknowledge one thing you’re grateful for, and celebrate one step forward. When you focus on building your own success, you’ll find that joy is no longer something to chase—it’s something you create, every single day.
